What Does Resetting Look Like at the Organizational Level? 💭
Greetings Beloved,
Most organizational cultures are carrying something they have not named yet.
Not because the leaders are unaware, because the culture has not yet created the conditions where honest naming feels safe enough to be worth the risk.
By October, that something has usually been accumulating for months. The relational fractures from Q2 that never fully healed. The burnout from the summer push that people described as "tired" but meant as "depleted." The team dynamic that shifted after a difficult conversation in August and has been slightly off ever since.
And now Q4 is arriving. And the strategic plan is ready. And the expectation is that everyone will perform.
The organizations whose cultures were carrying an unaddressed weight that compounded under sprint conditions and whose leaders did not stop in October to do the honest work of naming it are burning through their people in Q4. The invitation is to fully assess where the fractures live and the obstacles to performance exist.
That work is what we call the Reset.
What the Reset Is Not
The Reset is not a team-building retreat. It is not a new mission statement. It is not an HR initiative or a wellness program or a new communication protocol.
The Reset is an act of organizational honesty which is the willingness to look at the actual relational temperature of your culture before asking it to perform at its highest level.
Audre Lorde wrote in "A Burst of Light" (1988) that caring for oneself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation and an act of political warfare. The organizational equivalent is this: caring honestly for the relational health of a culture before the sprint is not softness. It is the most strategic act of organizational leadership available.
The Soil Check Applied to Organizations
At Love Before ALL, we use the Soil Check as the entry point into organizational reset work. It is a structured diagnostic that asks leaders to honestly assess four dimensions of their culture's current reality that asks a version of the following questions:
Where are the fractures, the unresolved tensions, the relationships that are functional but not genuinely safe?
Where is your team's allostatic load actually sitting right now?
Where has trust been eroded through decisions that were not explained, commitments that were not kept, or people who were not heard when they needed to be?
What are the structural conditions that are either protecting or depleting your team's capacity to perform?
This diagnostic is not comfortable. It is also not optional if you want to produce something sustainable rather than simply exhausting.
🧠 The Brain Science
Dr. Nadine Burke Harris, whose research on allostatic load and the nervous system has established how chronic stress accumulates in the body, describes the tipping point as the moment when the accumulated load exceeds the body's capacity to compensate. At that point, the prefrontal cortex, where your team's most valuable thinking happens, begins to fail under pressure. (Burke Harris, "The Deepest Well," 2018.)
The October Reset is the intervention that happens before that tipping point. It is the organizational equivalent of a body scan: an honest, non-judgmental assessment of where the load is sitting before you ask it to carry more.
🎯 What LBA Elevates
At Love Before ALL, the Reset work we do with organizations includes the Soil Check, facilitated honest conversation with leadership teams, and the development of a concrete repair plan.
This is organizational consulting work that is structural, not therapeutic. It produces data, honest data about the relational reality of your culture and a facilitated pathway for addressing what the data reveals.
⭐ The Practice: The Five-Minute Organizational Reset
Before your next leadership team meeting, open with this question: on a scale of one to ten, how honestly are we currently communicating with each other about what we are actually experiencing in this organization?
Do not move to the agenda until every person has answered. What you hear is your Soil Check. And what you do with it is your Reset.
